messages from the sun
August 29-31, 2019 / The Storefront Project
messages from the sun was presented as a part of Last Resort, a space staged at The Storefront Project on the Lower East Side that invited people to actively think about leisure time and celebrate the days of summer passed.
The installation was comprised of found materials to examine the limitations and flexibility of transforming discarded objects. Serving as an curtain-like entry into the space, recyclable plastics were woven into strands, painted gold, and framed by two floor-to-ceiling panels of mylar.
Visitors brought photos, notes, drawings, and other ephemera to contribute to the piece, creating a contemplative and conversational space about the bliss of summer and how the tenderness of our warmest moments make us feel.
The reflections of visitors in the mylar were melded with the pieces of material culture they contributed, putting on display collective memories of basking in nature’s radiance and the light of one another’s glow.
