New Wave

May 2018, Gallatin Galleries

New Wave is an installation that calls for an investigation of how we understand recycled and discarded materials. A gallery space was filled with long strands made from a variety of plastic containers— beverage bottles, iced coffee cups, produce cartons, shampoo bottles, liquid soap containers — collected from friends, family, and strangers alike. In a ritual, each was cared for: cleaned, dried, and reconfigured to create a new environment. The installation addressed modes of perception and function in regard to discarded materials. Viewers were encouraged to meditate on and converse with one another about the consumption, commodification, and utility of plastic by imagining alternative futures for our refuse.
